Yep, it’s that time of year. You know when everyone is ‘detoxing’ or talking about needing to detox. But what the heck is detoxing and what does it even mean?

Honestly, years ago, I knew detoxing to be what happened when you wanted to break your addiction to drugs and / or alcohol; however, like many words in the human language the definition has morphed. A simple Google search defines detox as, “a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification.” So detoxing is no longer limited to just drugs and alcohol, it is ANY toxic or unhealthy substance. Another Google search defines toxic as a poisonous substance and poisonous is a substance causing or capable of causing death or illness if taken into the body. As you can tell, I like to get to the root of a thing. In order for something to be effective you need to have an overstanding.

So with all the detoxing going on in the world during the month of January, hundreds of thousands of people are eliminating substances that could take them out… right?

But are toxins in the eye of the beholder?

I ask this because my definition of toxic substances (and people) may not be the same for the next person. With that being said, before starting any type of detox, it is important to determine what toxins you wish to eliminate and if you are eliminating them, are you bringing them back? Example, many people say, “I’m going to detox for 7-days. No meat, no sugar, no bread, and no sodas.” But when the detox is over they are eating the meat, sugar, bread and drinking sodas again, soooo what is the point of detoxing for 7-days. Why clean your system only to put the poison back in?

Now, please hear me, I am not saying ‘do not detox’ but I am asking that you question your WHY (are you detoxing) and what is your point (in detoxing). When a person detoxes from drugs and / or alcohol after the detox, the person abstains from putting those substances in their body again because their system is now ‘clean’. So when you are detoxing, are you doing so for temporary satisfaction or long-term health and healing? Is your desire to be free from the substances that you removed because they are poisoning your mind, body, and / or spirit? If so once your detox is over, then what…
